Bringing Aldi to Torquay Road, Torquay
We’ve been searching for a suitable location for a new store for the Torquay area for a number of years and we’re really excited about the possibility of opening a store on Torquay Road at Kerswell Gardens. We know our customers are currently travelling to our stores in Paignton and Newton Abbot, so this will greatly reduce the need to travel, and improve local shopping choice.
The site, currently occupied by Devon Garden Machinery, will be redeveloped to provide an Aldi discount foodstore, drive-thru Costa coffee shop and restaurant with drive-thru takeaway. Devon Garden Machinery will remain at the location but will move to brand new, built-for-purpose premises towards the rear of the site. The northern part of the site will be retained for future use as employment space with improved access and services.
Aldi stores are modest in scale and have a contemporary design. Unlike other supermarkets, Aldi is not a ‘one stop shop’. Its smaller stores focus on packaged food and convenience goods, complementing rather than competing with existing local shops and services.
The site will be landscaped and include a total of 168 car parking spaces, including 10 designated blue badge bays and 7 parent and child bays. The building will use modern, sustainable construction methods, include ample cycle parking and 4 electric vehicle charging points with the ability to add more in the future.
