Overview

Aldi is bringing forward proposals for a new food store in Wavertree, on land at Wavertree Retail Park, near to Edge Hill train station. The site currently houses an existing unit that is suitable in size for an Aldi foodstore, creating an opportunity to provide a new discount retailer serving Wavertree, improving local choice and competition in this part of Liverpool.

Aldi has identified a clear need for a discount retailer in this part of Liverpool, with local shopping options in the immediate area limited to more expensive competitors. Residents wishing to access Aldi’s award-winning range of low-cost, high-quality products must travel further afield to stores at Smithdown Road, Broad Green Road or in the city centre. These stores are increasingly busy and serve different catchment areas, making access to a discount retailer more difficult for residents in Wavertree.

A new Aldi food store at this site would improve choice and competition in Wavertree, reduce travel times for local shoppers and create 40 new, full-time jobs paid at an industry-leading rate, with hiring targeted at the local community.

Part of your community

We are proud to be at the heart of local communities across the country. To continue our community-led culture, we have set out a number of “neighbour-friendly” practices:

  • Aldi aims to recruit its store managers and store colleagues from the local area to further embed our store as part of the community, to enable us to understand and respond to local issues more quickly and effectively, and to allow our team a better work-life balance.
  • Aldi stocks a carefully selected range of approximately 2,500 core exclusive products, compared with supermarkets such as Asda or Tesco that may stock over 10 times that number of product lines. As a result, an Aldi food store will require only three to four deliveries per day.
  • Aldi’s delivery arrangements will ensure that all delivery activity takes place at the rear of the store with products transferred straight from the vehicle to the store via the covered loading bay. There will be no other external movement or any outside storage of goods, minimising the potential for any disruption.
  • Aldi collaborates with the community engagement platform Neighbourly to combat the devastating effects of hunger and fight against child food poverty, ensuring no child goes hungry. Through this partnership, local charities, community groups, and food banks are paired with Aldi stores, allowing them to collect surplus food and non-perishable products up to seven days a week.
  • We are proud to accept Free School Meal vouchers for the purchase of food and groceries.

Proposed site plan

Highways & Traffic

Aldi will undertake an extensive Transport Assessment as part of the planning application to a methodology agreed with the Highway Authority. The Assessment will look at access by foot, cycle and public transport. It will test the suitability of the proposed access for customers, staff and deliveries. It will also test what impacts the development might have on the local highway network and propose any improvements that may be needed to ensure the proposed food store does not have a negative impact on the local road network.

Vehicular access to the store will be maintained via the existing entry point off Wavertree Road, with a change to the internal junction prioritising customers visiting Aldi or Matalan, leading into the customer car park. Delivery vehicles will use the same entrance, but continue onto a separate offloading area. Access arrangements will be agreed with Highways Officers at Liverpool City Council, identifying any necessary mitigation during the planning process.

Pedestrians and Cyclists

Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to access the new food store safely via the existing main access point and pedestrian footways leading into Wavertree Retail Park, with cyclists able to access cycle parking at the front of the store.

Parking

The car park serving customers at the Aldi food store will be shared with customers at Matalan, offering free customer parking for 197 cars. Two additional accessible spaces will be provided, providing a total of eight, alongside six parent & child spaces. In addition, four fast electric vehicle charging points will be available at the store, with infrastructure in place to increase this number where necessary.

Deliveries

Aldi stocks a carefully selected range of approximately 1,800 core exclusive products, compared with supermarkets such as Asda or Tesco that may stock over 10 times that number of product lines. As a result, an Aldi food store will require only three to four deliveries per day.

We operate store deliveries outside peak transport hours, where possible. Aldi’s delivery processes are designed to save time and also reduces any potential noise disturbance to neighbouring properties.

A contemporary design

Aldi is committed to high-quality, contemporary store design. Our proposals for Wavertree would modernise and enhance the existing building, ensuring an improved experience for shoppers.

Key design features include offering a high-quality contemporary building, a functional layout for customers and using high-quality external materials and energy efficient lighting, aiming to create an attractive and welcoming gateway to the site.

Landscaping

Aldi takes great pride in the quality and design of its stores, with landscaping a key part of creating an appealing and welcoming environment. The proposal site is brownfield land, with development at this site in compliance with a brownfield-first approach.

Aldi will work to maintain the existing high-quality landscaping and screening at the boundary of the site and Wavertree Road.

Carbon reduction measures

At Aldi we’re committed to minimising our environmental impact and leading the way in carbon reduction efforts. Since 2015, we’ve sourced 100% renewable electricity and have taken significant steps to reduce our carbon emissions.

Our key methods of reducing carbon include:

  • Solar (PV) panels on all new stores
  • Reducing heat loss with seals on external doors
  • Energy efficiency measures – including carbon offsets for 100% of operation emissions
  • LED lighting
  • Careful sourcing of building materials
