Proposals for a new Aldi store for Ellesmere
Aldi, the award-winning discount food retailer, is bringing forward plans for a new high-quality food store at a site in Ellesmere. The proposal site is located off Scotland Street (A495), opposite Ellesmere Business Park.
In February 2023, Aldi consulted the local community about its plans for Ellesmere, which saw 89% of over 900 responses express support. Following discussions with Shropshire Council, which have resulted in minor amendments to the scheme, we are now presenting our updated plans to the community.
Aldi is keen to consult with the community ahead of submission so that we can hear your views first hand and take those into account as we finalise our proposals. We will report the outcome of this consultation in a Statement of Community Involvement that will be submitted with the planning application and encourage you to participate and provide your thoughts.

Community Consultation
Aldi deeply values community involvement when proposing new stores. To this end, we will be initiating a community consultation to gather insights from residents in Ellesmere before we submit a formal planning application.
This community consultation will be open to comments until 11 May 2026. This website will remain accessible throughout the entire planning process.
Once the community consultation concludes, Aldi will carefully review all the feedback received. This will play a vital role in shaping the planning application we submit to Shropshire Council in the subsequent months.
Improved choice for Ellesmere
Aldi would like to improve access to our low-cost, high-quality products for residents in Ellesmere.
Residents in Ellesmere looking to shop at Aldi must currently travel to either Owestry, located seven miles away, or to Whitchurch, located over 10 miles away. In addition to their distance from Ellesmere, these stores are increasingly busy and serve different catchment areas, limiting access to a discount retailer for residents in Ellesmere.
A new Aldi food store in this area would enhance the local retail offering and protect access to a discount retailer in the community for years to come.
